About the U.S. Navy Method

How it works:

The U.S. Navy method uses body circumference measurements to estimate body fat percentage. This method is widely used because it's non-invasive, cost-effective, and reasonably accurate when performed correctly.

Measurement Tips:

  • Take measurements at the same time of day for consistency
  • Measure on bare skin, not over clothing
  • Keep the measuring tape snug but not tight
  • Take multiple measurements and use the average
  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple)
  • Waist: Measure at the narrowest point (usually just above the navel)
  • Hips (women): Measure at the widest point of the hips

Important Notes:

  • This is an estimation method and may not be 100% accurate
  • Results can vary based on body type and measurement technique
  • For the most accurate assessment, consult a healthcare professional
  • Body fat percentage is just one indicator of health and fitness
